Womens Center

The Ohio Center for the Advancement of Women in Public Service

The Ohio Center for the Advancement of Women in Public Service works to promote the advancement of public service careers for women and men within the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government and at the national, state, and local levels. It accomplishes its mission through educational programs designed to foster and encourage the selection of public service as a profession.

Mentoring Program

The Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Visiting Committee created a Mentoring Program in 1998. This dedicated group of individuals wanted to participate directly with Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs students and realized the most effective way to share their knowledge and experience was through mentoring. It is the intention of Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs to offer students the opportunity to apply and participate in a mentoring program that will enhance learning relevant to the world outside the School. For more about mentoring see Learn more about the Mentoring Program.

Women's Leadership Series

This series was created to engage and empower public and nonprofit sector leaders throughout Northeast Ohio, while promoting the concept of gender representation at all levels of leadership.

The theme – “Women Empowering Women” – hones in on the notion that women should support, empower, and mentor one another. The series’ programming is strategically designed to capitalize on this theme of empowerment within sectors where political pressures are at play, resources remain tight, and the competition to rise to executive leadership endures.

Careers in Government

The Center, in its endeavors to recruit young people for careers in the public sector, uses life stories to highlight the benefits and rewards that come with that choice. For example, in the past, the Center invited the husband and wife teams of the Honorable Justice Alice M. Batchelder, United State Court of Appeals for the Sixth District, the Honorable Justice William G. Batchelder, Ohio Court of Appeals Ninth Appellate District, and the Honorable Emily Sweeney, retired United States Attorney, Northern District of Ohio and the Honorable Patrick Sweeney, Executive-in-Residence at the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs and former State Representative from Cleveland, to discuss political marriages.
