Program Overview

The Nursing education specialization is designed for nurses who want to lead healthcare innovations and influence policy.  Our interdisciplinary program prepares nurse scholars to develop and conduct scientific research that advances the theoretical foundation of nursing and healthcare delivery and prepares professional nurses for faculty positions in nursing education leadership roles. Applicants must hold a Master of Science in Nursing degree, an active unrestricted nursing license, and have recent experience in nursing practice and/or education. The core and specialization courses will expand their understanding of the various aspects of educating individuals to function in a complex applied discipline. The research sequence will prepare them to engage in original research in areas related to educating nurses at all levels.

• For a career as a nurse scientist, conducting cutting-edge research in nursing education.
• To provide leadership in the advancement of nursing as an academic and practice discipline.
• To facilitate curriculum design, development of courses, and evaluation of program and learner outcomes using evidence-based strategies.
• To function as a change agent, innovator, and leader with the continuous pursuit of quality improvement in the nurse educator role.
• To be experts within the profession in educating individuals to function in a complex health-care system
 

Careers

Nurse educators are found in schools of nursing as faculty members or in health care agencies as staff development and patient education specialists. Examples of career opportunities include:
• Faculty member, dean or associate dean of a college or university nursing program
• Education analyst and educational consultant
• Director of nursing health care system

Admission Requirements
Admission Term: Applications for admission are processed for Fall semester only

Application Deadline: First Monday in February
Prerequisites:  Applicants must hold a Master of Science in Nursing degree, an active, unrestricted nursing license, and have recent experience in nursing practice and/or education.
GRE Requirement: Required.
Letters of Recommendation: Required and a statement of purpose along with the resume

Degree Completion Requirements

This specialization requires a minimum of 20 hours of coursework.
• NUR 710 - Theoretical Foundations of Practice & Nursing Education
• NUR 730 - Teaching in Schools of Nursing
• NUR 740 - Research in Nursing Education
• NUR 760 - Advanced Nursing Curriculum Design
• NUR 780 - Professional Role Nursing Education
• At least one additional elective approved by the student's advisor.

* Students wishing to replace a course listed above with another will need to seek permission from the School of Nursing through their advisor.
