The Levin College of Public Affairs and Education provides student enrichment opportunities that foster learning outside the classroom, including field experiences, internships, mentoring, graduate assistantships, student employment, and applied learning with community partners. Levin’s engaged learning approach provides students with meaningful opportunities to engage with educators, government officials, and professionals in public and nonprofit organizations across the fields embodied throughout our academic degree programs.
Field Experiences
Students pursuing degrees in Education are required to participate in supervised field experiences with CSU’s PK-12 District partners. Education majors are gradually introduced to the full range of experiences associated with a teacher's role. These experiences prepare students by stressing practical applications of theory and research to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of instruction. Students explore the various roles of the teacher and begin formulating a personal teaching philosophy while working in a school classroom under the direction of a mentor teacher and a faculty instructor or a university supervisor. Field experience courses provide direct application of academic content to relevant clinical practice situations. *All Education students must have a valid and unexpired Clearance Report from the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on file with the college advising office.
Internships
Internships are an integral part of the Levin experience and constitute the core of experiential learning. Undergraduate students in the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs are required to complete an internship as part of their path to degree completion, and internship opportunities are available to all interested and eligible Levin students as well. The College provides hundreds of internships annually. These internships often result in a direct connection with not only a job, but a career with meaning. Mentoring
Our Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs’ Mentoring Program matches Levin undergraduate and graduate students with executive-level public and nonprofit sector community leaders based on each student's unique career aspirations. The program runs throughout the duration of one academic year and includes individual mentoring sessions, monthly on-campus group activities, network events, and career development sessions.
