DR. Mark Salling Publishes Article In The GIS Professional

In his recent article, “GIS Is Important to Ensure Democracy,”  Dr. Mark J. Salling, Senior Fellow and Research Associate at the Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs, writes that voting rights have been much in the news lately, with some state legislatures moving to change how voting happens and ultimately who votes. Meanwhile, Congress has (so far) failed to pass proposed major legislation aimed at standardizing voting and guaranteeing voting rights across the nation. The use of Geographic Information Systems technology plays an important role in how elections are carried out and whether our democratic principles are sustained. Dr. Salling says that depending on the state or local jurisdiction, partisan interests of both major political parties have undermined those principles in important ways.
