Summer Application for Petition Verification Opportunities

Looking for something to do for a couple weeks this summer? Did you know, the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections (CCBOE) is now paying their temporary staff $15 an hour, and offers free parking?

To work as a temporary employee for the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections:

  • You must be able to work our core hours of 8:30 am through 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday;
  • You must be registered to vote;
  • You cannot be running as a candidate for the election in which you are working. 
  • Please Note: Title 35 of the Ohio Revised Code prohibits anyone convicted of a felony to serve as an election officer

This assignment is expected to start the second week of July and last roughly two weeks. The hours are typically 8:30am-4:30pm (with an unpaid 1 hour lunch), *note that hours may vary depending on the need of the department.

Election Day Workers

Ever wonder what it would be like to help conduct an election? People are needed on Election Day to help staff the polls, transport ballots and materials, and maintain political balance. Be a part of history, support democracy, and have fun by becoming an Election Day Worker.

Starting pay for Precinct Election Officials is $220. Precinct Election Officials are required to work from 6:00 pm until approximately 8:00 pm the Monday night before Election Day, and from 5:30 a.m. until the Polling Location has completely shut down on Election Day (approximately 8:30 p.m.)

  • You must be a registered voter in Cuyahoga County.
  • You must never have been convicted of a felony.
  • You cannot be a candidate for an office or a position and serve as an election official in any precinct where your name appears on the ballot.

Summary of Temporary Employment Opportunities

Ballot Department

Ballot Technician
Participates in proofreading draft ballots/notices/reports/audio for content and accuracy. Assist with Ballot scanning/verification/filing. Assist with ballot remakes, recounts and audits. Requires reading, listening (in a somewhat noisy environment), and sitting/standing for long periods. Ability to follow step-by-step instructions. Requires twisting/bending/squatting, lifting/carrying 30 pounds at one time. Performs Election Night activities as assigned.

Ballot Proofing
Responsible for the accurate proofreading of the ballots and other pertinent documents. Assists in the accurate preparation of all equipment needed to conduct business within the department. Assists with the testing of ballot scanning equipment. Performs data entry and clerical tasks relative to all responsibilities of the department. Assists with the scanning of ballots leading up to and on Election Day, during the Official Canvass, recounts and audits. Assists with the preparation, hand counting and filing of election materials during recounts and audits.

Ballot Scanner Operator
The scanner operator is paired with another employee and serves as a work team responsible for scanning Vote-by-Mail ballots. Each team consists of an input operator and output operator who must stand next to a high-speed scanner for the majority of the workday. Responsible for loading Vote-by-Mail ballots into a high-speed scanner and collecting the scanned ballots and placing them into locationspecific files. Monitors the high-speed scanner for jamming and any other equipment issues. Requires individuals to assist with the preparation of equipment and materials to be scanned and the subsequent storage of the scanned materials.

Nursing Home Election Official
Travels to nursing homes within Cuyahoga County to deliver, assist, and return absentee ballots. Must have daily access to a personal vehicle, a current valid driver’s license, and auto insurance. Ability to work in a team environment and perform in a professional manner under stress when confronted with tight deadlines. Officials must demonstrate a professional attitude and appearance, as well as availability to work extended hours. Must be either a registered Democrat or Republican to comply with Ohio law.

Vote-by-Mail Election Official
The Vote-by-Mail (VBM) Election Official will assist full-time staff in the duties performed by the Ballot/Vote-by-Mail Department. Duties include opening mail, processing absentee applications, and verifying voter registration. Assisting voters with resolving discrepancies on ballot applications. Basic data entry and word processing skills required. Customer service experience preferred.

Vote-by-Mail Ballot Opener/Counter
The Ballot Opener/Counter is responsible for opening and counting the VBM ballots after they have been returned to the Board of Elections. Basic math skills required. Basic data entry and word processing skills are helpful, but not required.

Candidate and Petition Service

Early-in-Person Voting Election Official
Assists the Candidate and Petition Services team with coordination of all activities related to Early InPerson voting. This includes helping with sorting and setting up ballots for early voting, assisting voters by verifying their voter registration and retrieving the correct precinct ballot to vote. Assists in maintaining voting machines, supplies and common areas used by the public. Answers phones and general questions from the public. Performs other duties as assigned. Must have strong customer service and data entry skills, and general computer knowledge.

Election Support Department

Warehouse Official
Must be able to lift, push, and pull 50 pounds repeatedly. Physical activity such as bending, reaching, stooping, and extended periods of standing is required. Officials must be competent at performing routine manual labor tasks. Excellent attention to detail, proven ability to understand and execute written and verbal instructions is essential. Assisting drivers with the loading, delivery, and unloading of polling place supplies, cleaning of voting materials and preparing election-related equipment/supplies are all necessary skills needed to succeed in this position.

Registration Official
Performs various processes related to the verification of information on election petitions. Responsible for the data entry of various documents pertaining to the election process into the Board’s voter registration system. Aids in the coordination of preparing various documents for processing such as voter registration cards and petitions. Proofreads documents for grammatical errors and accurate context. Aids in the proofing and testing of the electronic pollbooks. Ensures duties are conducted according to the National Voter Registration Act and Help America Vote Act procedures. Prepares all reports as required. Safeguards sensitive documents and supplies.

Election Officials Department

Recruiter
Assists in the recruitment, scheduling of training, and payroll processing for all Election Day workers. Recruitment may require deployment to community events, designated recruitment spots, community centers, libraries, and other events scheduled by the Elections Officials Department. Responsible for assigning qualified applicants as poll workers or Rovers to all polling locations. Answers questions from poll workers on Election Day. Performs data entry tasks and clerical functions relative to all responsibilities of the department. Strong phone skills is highly desirable.

Trainer
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of the Election Officials Department, the Training Instructor is responsible for administering training techniques and election procedures to Election Day Workers. Training material content includes needed procedures, equipment, supplies and other necessary skills to successfully conduct an election in a professional, courteous, and lawful manner.

Training Assistant
Primary function is to assist with the Election Official training classes, including delivery of supplies, training room set-up, class instruction and assessment, and provides support to the Training Instructor.

Position: Ohio Deputy State Coordinator

Fair Elections Center’s Campus Vote Project seeks an Ohio Deputy State Coordinator. Deputy State Coordinators are key members of our team. They are charged with working with State Coordinators to manage and strengthen existing relationships with campus administration and faculty leadership and establish new, lasting relationships with campuses to carry out our goals. Position: Teen Navigator
Company: The Refugee Response

The Teen Navigator will support the implementation and growth of the Teen Response Program as it enters its fifth year. Teen Response is an afterschool program based at John Marshall High School, and is a collaboration between the Refugee Response and CMSD’s Multilingual Multicultural Education Office. The program provides crucial afterschool training, counseling, career exposure and experiences to about 35 resettled refugee students as well as their parents/guardians, allowing the youth to be more successful in both school and life during and after high school. In 2022 Teen Response is poised to expand to reach more students at John Marshall High School through lighter touch services, as well as to two additional sites. The Teen Navigator will provide onsite support at John Marshall High School to program delivery alongside the Teen Response Program Manager and Teen Response Coordinator. The Teen Navigator will principally be responsible for the one-to-one guidance and support for teens in grades 9 through 11 and their families.

Teen Refugee Response is seeking tutors for the Refugee Response program at John Marshall High School that supports refugee students in grades 9-12. Tutors would be responsible for helping in the subjects of English, Biology, Algebra, Geometry, American History, and Spanish, but there may be other class assignments the students may need help with as well. The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections plans to hire 100 people to work approximately 4 hours (with pay of $15 per hour) on Tuesday, August 3rd as:

  • Van ballot box handlers – Their duties include removing the ballot boxes from vans to carts and bringing the carts to the ballot box processing area. 
  • Vault ballot box handlers – These are physically strong people that can lift upwards of 50 lb. boxes throughout the night.  We will have approximately 200 such boxes.
  • Ballot box runners – These individuals will move the ballot boxes from carts to the table, and once the ballot box openers have completed processing the bags, the runners will move the ballot boxes from openers’ tables to the storage vault. These individuals will need to be physically strong, as this process is demanding.  
  • Ballot Box openers – These individuals will open the canvas ballot box, remove and organize its contents.  

This is a great opportunity to see the election process and be civically involved, and it is also a good way for an organization to raise funds. The only qualifications for hiring are to provide a social security number for payroll purposes; be over 18 years of age, and not be a convicted felon.

Paid Student Voter Engagement Fellowship Opportunities through Campus Vote Project and the OCE

Summary:

The Campus Vote Project (CVP) is a national nonpartisan project that helps America's colleges and universities to get as many of their 20 million students as possible to register, volunteer in campaigns, educate themselves and turn out at the polls.

Fellows will lead their campus with voter registration, voter education, and voter engagement for the spring semester 2021. Fellows will work with the CSU Office of Civic Engagement to help register and engage the CSU community in the election process, and work to institutionalize voter and civic engagement on campus. Fellows will receive orientation, training, support, and guidance from CVP.

Fellows must currently be enrolled in courses at CSU. The Fellowship will start at the beginning of the spring semester. The total stipend for this Fellowship is $1,200. Fellows will be paid $500 at the end of the spring semester. If a Fellow chooses to continue the Fellowship through the fall 2021 semester, they will receive the remaining $700.
