Workshop Overview

This workshop introduces participants to ESRI ArcGIS mapping and analysis software - ArcGIS Pro. The workshop covers fundamental GIS concepts, geospatial data, and how to map and analyze data at the basic level. Participants will become familiar with the ArcGIS Pro, local GIS data, frequently used GIS tools, and map layouts. Participants are provided with access to the software, a lab workbook, and a USB data storage device. Participants must be comfortable using a desktop computer and the internet.

Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Objectives

Participants learn how to use ArcGIS Pro to explore how to manage geospatial data and analyze census, real property, client/customer, public infrastructure, and related data. Attendees will design and create maps and produce new data that help address issues and solve practical problems. Topics cover the following components:

  • ArcGIS Pro Overview: Capabilities and applications; interacting with the software’s interface; controlling the display characteristics of data layers.
  • Thematic Maps:  Types of themes include unique groups of spatial objects, criteria-based graduated colors or symbols, and dot density.
  • GIS Outputs: Produce presentation quality maps using map templates and layouts with elements of the title, legend, scale, sources, and logos. Participants will also learn how to publish their work to the Internet.
  • Geodatabases: Create a personal geodatabase; populate the geodatabase from shapefiles and databases; join and relate data layers; analyze and display aggregated data from joined tables.
  • Importing Spatial and Attribute Data: Download and import spatial and attribute data from public sources; define and change map projections. Federal, state, and local sources of data are included.
  • Digitize and Edit Spatial Features:  Use digitizing tools to create new spatial features of points, lines, and polygons.  Edit existing spatial features.
  • Geocode: Create point locations based on an interpolation method with a street address database or by polygon method such as zip codes.
  • Attribute Data Queries and Spatial Processing: Select features by attribute queries; add field and calculate or update field values; clip, dissolve and append layers.
  • Spatial Analysis: Query and select by location using spatial relationships of within, contain, intersect, etc.; buffer spatial features, then spatially query to locate features in the buffer zones.
Audience

This workshop is open to everyone.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this workshop. No experience with desktop mapping or GIS technology is required, but registrants should know how to use Windows-based software.
