Meet OCE Viking Corps & America Reads Tutor, Daniel Winter

" -    I chose CSU due to its close proximity and its low cost compared to other colleges. I live in Eastlake, and Cleveland is a short drive which saves me the cost of room and board. For cost, CSU provides many scholarships and grants that I can take advantage of. I am able to receive a grant from the state of Ohio for my engineering program, the Parker Hannifin scholarship, and Federal Student Aid. "

Daniel hired by the OCE as a Viking corps tutor, is a Freshman majoring in 'Electrical Engineering' loves teaching people in the areas of Mathematics, Physics and Spanish.

Why should other CSU students consider getting involved in programs/jobs like this?

Engaging in tutoring presents an exceptional opportunity for students to make a profound impact on the community while simultaneously earning a competitive wage. Unlike many other entry-level positions, tutoring requires no prior experience, allowing students to seamlessly integrate this meaningful work into their academic schedules. The flexible schedule and convenient tutoring sites located near campus further enhance the accessibility and appeal of this rewarding endeavor.

By dedicating their time and expertise to tutoring, students have the privilege of fostering academic growth, nurturing confidence, and igniting a passion for learning among their peers. The satisfaction derived from witnessing the progress of their students, as they grasp complex concepts and overcome challenges, is an unparalleled reward.

How is this job experience making an impact on you as an individual or on your time as a college student at CSU?

My involvement in this tutoring program has allowed me to make a significant impact on the community, particularly in the realm of mathematics. Witnessing the familiar faces of my students, their smiles reflecting genuine appreciation for my efforts, is a source of immense satisfaction. It is this sense of connection and the tangible impact on their academic progress that make this endeavor so deeply rewarding.

Have you learned anything about yourself or about working in the community so far from working in this program?

Engaging with children has been an unexpectedly rewarding experience, challenging my preconceived notions about working with kids. Initially, I approached the task with some apprehension, but as I delved into their world, I discovered a treasure trove of joy, curiosity, and endless possibilities. Interacting with kids has opened my eyes to their unique perspectives, their boundless enthusiasm, and their ability to find wonder in the simplest things.

What is your most memorable moment of the job so far?

My most memorable tutoring moment unfolded when a preschool-aged student accompanied by his mother sought assistance with reading single-syllable words. As we embarked on our learning journey, dedicating at least 30 minutes to focused practice, I witnessed his remarkable progress. With each word he sounded out and read aloud, his confidence grew, and his eyes sparkled with newfound understanding. The joy on his mother's face, radiating pride and appreciation, was a heartwarming testament to the transformative power of education. This unforgettable experience reaffirmed my passion for nurturing young minds and ignited a spark of inspiration within me

Are you reading any books with your students? How are you making a difference to a student by reading with them?

My primary role as a tutor involves assisting students in completing their assigned homework. However, I have observed that reading aloud with students yields remarkable benefits, particularly in enhancing their pronunciation skills. As we engage in this shared activity, I notice a distinct improvement in their ability to articulate sounds clearly and accurately. The repetition and exposure to proper pronunciation patterns instilled through reading aloud foster a sense of confidence and fluency in their spoken language.

Do you have any students coming in regularly for tutoring?

My tutoring sessions are enriched by the familiar faces of four regular visitors who eagerly anticipate my arrival. Their welcoming smiles and enthusiasm set a positive tone for our learning sessions, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. The consistency of their presence not only allows me to tailor my instruction to their individual needs but also creates a supportive and encouraging environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new concepts.

What subjects are you finding yourself tutoring the most?

My tutoring expertise lies primarily in the realms of mathematics and writing. Guiding students through the intricacies of mathematical concepts and nurturing their ability to express themselves effectively through writing have become my areas of specialization. In the domain of mathematics, I relish the challenge of illuminating the underlying patterns and relationships that govern numbers and equations. As students grasp these fundamental principles, I witness their confidence soar and their curiosity expand.

In the realm of writing, I am particularly passionate about empowering students to articulate their thoughts and ideas with clarity and precision. Whether crafting persuasive arguments, constructing coherent narratives, or simply refining their grammar and usage, I take immense satisfaction in nurturing their writing skills and witnessing their ability to communicate effectively across various genres and mediums.

Both mathematics and writing serve as essential tools for navigating the complexities of the world around us. By fostering a deep understanding of these disciplines, I am privileged to contribute to the intellectual growth and personal development of my students, empowering them to become confident and articulate communicators in their academic pursuits and beyond.
