Meet OCE Davis Aerospace & Maritime High School & CPL America Reads Tutor, Kylie O'Sullivan

"The kids told me they were excited to see me, and it made me so happy to know they looked forward to me being there. It showed me that I am making a positive impact in their lives."

Kylie was hired by the OCE as a Viking Corps tutor for the Fall 2022 semester. Kylie is majoring in Mathematics in hopes to become a high school math teacher.

Can you share a specific interaction you had with a student that was meaningful to you?
There have been a few interactions with students that have been very meaningful, but there is one that stands out. A couple of weeks into working I had just gotten out of my car and a few of the kids, who I had been helping with homework regularly, ran out to say “hello” and give me hugs.

What made you want to work as a Viking Corps Tutor?
Over the summer I started considering pursuing a degree in education, and I saw the email come across for a tutoring position with the Office of Civic Engagement. I thought it was a great opportunity to see if education was really what I wanted to do, and it is!

Why did you choose to attend CSU?
I choose to attend CSU for a variety of reasons. I recently declared my major, but going into school a lot of the staff and other students reassured me it was okay to be uncertain about what I wanted to pursue. I also really like the location with it being right in downtown Cleveland which offers a lot to do not only on campus but off campus as well. Another reason, perhaps one of the most significant deciding factors was the distance from my home. It is only an hour away which allows me to still be able to see my family often.

Any thoughts on why students should get involved with programs, like Viking Corps, while they are students?
I think other students should get involved with these jobs/programs because it offers a lot of valuable experience. It offers a chance to get involved in helping the community, and for me personally, it is extremely rewarding to see the kids become more comfortable around me and start to show their personalities. The Office of Civic Engagement (OCE) staff is very welcoming and really easy to work with. The OCE works with your schedule and find times that work for you and are very open to adjusting your schedule because they are aware of a college student's very busy and ever-changing schedule.
